The Illusion of “Free”

There’s no such thing as free shipping.
Only delayed consequences.

Every time you hit Buy Now, it sets off a chain reaction:

• A half-empty two-wheeler or delivery van races across your city

• Excess packaging is used to ensure "safe & fast" delivery

• Single-item trips multiply across localities

• Reverse logistics burn double the emissions

• Returns often get tossed, not resold

Your 10-minute delivery?
That’s 1 trip, 1 plastic bag, 1 cardboard box, 1 invoice, and 1 carbon footprint…
for a packet of chips.

Now multiply that by 4 crore deliveries a day in India.
And you see the scale of the issue.

India’s Hyperlocal Emissions Boom

India’s quick commerce sector — Blinkit, Zepto, Swiggy Instamart — is expected to grow 10x by 2025.

What Happens to Returns?

Most returns don’t go back on the shelf.

They’re often:

• Incinerated

• Or shipped again to secondary markets with little accountability

In the case of fast fashion or FMCG items, many aren’t reused — they’re just repackaged as waste.

So What Can We Do?

This isn’t about blaming consumers.
It’s about making better-informed choices.

Here’s where we start:

✅ Delay the delivery – choose the 2-day option instead of 2-hour
✅ Bundle your purchases – order once a week, not 5 times a week
✅ Say no to urgency marketing – “only 5 left” is often a lie
✅ Support local – walk to the store when you can
✅ Push for reusable packaging options
✅ Support brands with transparent return and disposal practices

The Circular Fix

Sustainability isn’t about saying no to convenience forever.
It’s about designing convenience better.

Imagine if:

East Africa’s largest dumping ground.
A mountain of global fashion waste.
Built one donation, one return box, one impulse buy at a time.

This is where “away” ends up.

What Happens to the Clothes We Donate?

Here’s what we were told:

“Don’t throw clothes in the bin. Donate them.”
“Drop them off at the big brand’s take-back box.”
“Let’s recycle. Let’s be responsible.”

But here’s the truth:

12 million pieces of used clothing from the UK alone end up in Kenya every year.
Most of it is low-quality plastic fiber.
Much of it is so damaged, stained, or contaminated — it's dumped or burned on arrival.

What was marketed as “circularity”
has turned into waste colonialism.

Dandora: A Global Consequence Hidden in Plain Sight

Piles of unwearable clothing spill into rivers.
30% of them are made entirely of plastic.
H&M, Nike, and Yves Saint Laurent tags float in the toxic soup.

Even worse?

Clothes are reportedly burned to heat water, cook food, or even fuel small power plants.
Imagine wearing polyester and realizing…
it might end up burned for energy in someone else’s backyard.

The Circular Illusion

This is the part that hurts the most:

• Brands advertise “take-back programs.”

• NGOs position themselves as saviors of textile waste.

• Plastic-heavy garments are promoted as “eco” because they contain 14% PET-bottle polyester.

Meanwhile, the reality on the ground?

Ragpickers in Nairobi are opening bales to find:
🧼 Clothes soiled with vomit.
🐾 Pet hair and heavy stains.
🧺 Fabric blends that cannot be recycled.

This isn’t sustainability.
It’s laundering — in both senses of the word.

Some Facts That Should Shock Us

• Only 1% of clothing is recycled into new garments.

• 100 billion pieces of clothing are produced every year.

• Over 50% of all clothing contains synthetic plastic fibers.

• Europe’s largest exporters of textile waste to Kenya? Germany, Poland, and the UK.

And on average?

🧥 Each Kenyan receives 17 second-hand garments every year.
🗑️ Up to 8 of those are immediately useless.

This Is Not a Kenya Problem

This is not a donation problem.
This is not even a second-hand problem.

It’s a supply chain failure.

When fast fashion uses plastic to mass-produce disposable garments…
When “donation” becomes the final step in the customer journey…
When charities and recyclers ship waste to the Global South to protect Western reputations…

We don’t have a recycling system.
We have a global waste displacement machine.

What Needs to Change

No, we don’t need to shut down second-hand markets.
But we do need to overhaul them.

🔁 Brands must design with recycling and reuse in mind
🚫 Plastic-heavy clothing should be taxed or banned
📊 Trade law must close the loopholes on “hidden” waste exports
💬 Consumers should stop believing every green sticker they see
📦 EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) should apply to fashion — globally

And most importantly:

🧹 The burden of “cleaning up” should never fall on the countries least responsible for the mess.

You can’t unsee Dandora.

This isn’t about guilt.

Indore didn’t just introduce a few programs.

It rebuilt its waste management ecosystem from scratch, with discipline, scale, and public participation.

Here’s what sets the city apart:

1. 100% Door-to-Door Collection

Every household in the city — over 4 lakh of them — is covered under a well-orchestrated daily collection system.
Trucks with GPS tracking and dual compartments (for wet and dry waste) pick up waste every single day.

No missed homes. No piles on street corners.

📱 Citizens even use an app to track pickup times and report issues.

2. Decentralized Segregation at Scale

Indore operates over 600 “transfer stations” and decentralized mini-MRFs.

This ensures waste is:

• Collected faster

• Segregated more efficiently

• Sent to the right downstream process — composting, recycling, or energy recovery

These centers are staffed, monitored, and fully functional.

3. High Material Recovery Rates

Indore diverts nearly 70% of its waste away from landfills.

How?

• Composting almost all of its organic waste

• Recycling over 6,000 tons of plastic into roads, tiles, and construction materials

• Sending reject waste to co-processing units (like cement kilns)

This makes it a rare Indian city to actually practice the “reduce-reuse-recycle” loop.

Indore shows us that this can be fixed — with the right mindset and model.

And in a country battling with over 62 million tons of annual waste, it stands tall as a model of what’s possible.

Building citizen trust.

The Early Morning Truth

A few weeks ago, I took a walk at 4 AM.
I spoke to a few of these workers.

They weren’t angry.
They weren’t blaming anyone.

One of them, probably in his late 50s, said something that stuck with me:

“If I don’t do it, who will? I do it for the next generation.”

Let that sink in.

Someone earning a fraction of minimum wage,
Cleaning the city without applause,
Still carries a sense of generational responsibility.

While many of us scroll past litter,
Debate policies from AC boardrooms,
Or say, “It’s not my job.”

So Why Don’t We Do It?

I wanted to understand this at scale.
So I ran a LinkedIn survey.

2,000+ responses.

I asked people why they thought India’s streets remained dirty.

The top two reasons?

2. Laziness

People admitted:

“If I don’t see a bin nearby, I just throw it on the road.”

Yet this is the same crowd
That travels to the US, UK, Canada, Japan…
And comes back saying:

“Their cities are so clean. Their governments do such a great job!”

Sure, their systems are better.
But here’s the uncomfortable truth:

We don’t behave better because we’re better people.
We behave better because we know we’ll be punished.

It’s Not About Culture. It’s About Consequences.

We don’t dare to spit in Singapore because there’s a fine.
We separate waste in Germany because we’ll be penalized.

But here?
No consequences = no accountability.

So we take the shortcut.
We blame the system.
And forget that we are the system.

What Needs to Change

Clean streets don’t start with more machines.
They start with mindset.

Yes, we need more bins.
Yes, municipalities need reform.

But let’s also:

• Teach waste segregation like we teach the alphabet

• Introduce civic responsibility into school curriculums
