Your first thought would probably be: how did someone get a boat out here?

They didn’t.
The water left.

The Aral Sea was once the fourth-largest lake in the world.

Then, starting in the 1960s, the Soviet Union diverted the rivers feeding it to irrigate cotton and other crops.

Kazakhstan decided to try saving the smaller northern basin.

In 2005, it completed the Kok-Aral Dam, supported by World Bank financing.
The idea was straightforward: retain water from the Syr Darya in the north, instead of letting it drain into the much larger, shrinking southern basin.

And the response was surprisingly quick.

NASA’s satellite images showed substantial recovery between 2005 and 2007, with much of that change happening in the first year after the dam was completed.

Give a damaged ecosystem some of what it needs, and sometimes it responds faster than you expect.

The fishing numbers make this tangible. According to the World Bank, catches increased from around 50 tonnes in 2004 to roughly 2,000 tonnes in 2007. Fish processing plants opened, and exports resumed in 2008. This was already becoming a livelihood story, alongside an environmental one.

The recovery has continued, although it deserves more careful reporting than some of the headlines suggest.

That’s a meaningful improvement. We don’t need to inflate it.

Working in waste, I keep coming back to this part. You can build the facility, install the machinery, and announce the capacity. But the result still depends on what reaches the gate, who operates the system, and whether everyone involved keeps doing their part.

The Aral Sea makes that painfully visible. Decisions upstream helped empty it. Different decisions are helping refill one part of it.

Kazakhstan’s next restoration phase aims to expand the dam and eventually increase the northern basin’s volume to 34 billion cubic metres. That remains a target, with infrastructure and water management work still ahead.

I find this hopeful precisely because it has taken twenty years. We can see what was built, what changed, and what still needs to happen.

Meanwhile, there was water in the air around them.

You can see where this is going.
But stay with me, because the interesting part is how they’re collecting it.

The village is called Wadji.
Around 2,000 people live here, and getting drinking water has meant travelling to collect it and carrying it back.
Think about the effort involved in that.
Before work, before school, before anything else, someone has to go get water.

The village now has a machine called Meghdoot, installed at its primary school and Anganwadi.
It can produce up to 500 litres of drinking water a day from moisture in the air.

When I first read this, I wanted to understand how it actually works.
Because “water from air” sounds like the kind of claim you’d see in a startup pitch deck.

But the principle is something we’ve all seen.

Meghdoot does this deliberately. It draws air in, cools it, collects the water, then filters and disinfects it for drinking. The system was developed through a collaboration between CSIR-IICT in Hyderabad and Maithri Aquatech.

The science is familiar.
Putting it to work at a village school is absolute gold.

There are practical limits, of course.
The machine needs electricity and maintenance.
Its output depends on temperature and humidity, so 500 litres is its capacity under suitable conditions.
You can’t assume it will deliver that every day.

And let’s put that number in perspective.
Five hundred litres for a village of 2,000 people works out to 250 millilitres per person.
One glass each, even at full output.

So we shouldn’t turn this into “an entire village’s water crisis has been solved.”

What Wadji has is an additional source of drinking water, located at a school, without having to draw that water from another well.

But think about what it can mean.
A place to fill a bottle.
Water available at school.
A source that doesn’t require drilling another borewell.

We often judge an invention by how extraordinary it looks.
This one deserves attention for something much simpler:

How much closer it can bring a glass of water.

India generates close to 62 million tonnes of municipal solid waste every year, and a growing share of it starts at the workplace, not the home.

Indians now go through an estimated 24 billion disposable paper cups a year.
Most get used once, for a five-minute chai break, then thrown straight into a bin that mixes everything together.

Paper cups are just the visible part.
The real weight sits in printouts nobody collects, lunch boxed in plastic nobody separates, and old laptops stacked in a storeroom because nobody knows where e-waste is supposed to go.

Companies budget lakhs for cybersecurity training, sales training, POSH training. Waste gets a poster in the pantry, if that.

That gap used to be a quiet inefficiency.
From April 1, 2026, under India’s new Solid Waste Management Rules, it becomes a compliance risk with your company’s name on it.

The Real Cost Of Doing Nothing

Let’s get specific about what the new rules actually require.

Under the Solid Waste Management Rules 2026, any office classified as a Bulk Waste Generator, meaning a campus over 20,000 square metres, or generating 100 kg of waste a day, or using 40,000 litres of water a day, has to segregate waste into four separate streams: wet, dry, sanitary, and hazardous or special care.

Miss that, and the Polluter Pays principle kicks in: environmental compensation, charged directly, with District Collectors now required to run annual landfill audits to check who’s actually complying.

A centralized digital tracking portal is going to follow where bulk waste generators’ trash goes, stream by stream.
For the first time, a company’s waste habits are about to be visible on paper, not just in a dumpster behind the building.

Most offices aren’t ready.
A 2023 fact sheet from Chintan Environmental found Indian cities still send well over half of collected waste to landfills with little to no segregation at source, workplaces included.

Why Your Waste Training Doesn’t Work

Most companies that do try to fix this make the same move: a slideshow during onboarding, an email from HR, a poster near the pantry that says “Segregate Your Waste.”

It doesn’t work.

Only 62% of employees report feeling motivated during standard compliance training, the same category waste and environment training falls under.
Close to a third check out mentally before the session even ends.

Nobody changes which bin they use because they sat through one slide about SWM Rules 2026 a single time in March.
People need a reason to care every single day, not once a year.

So the poster stays up, the bins stay mixed, and the compliance risk stays exactly where it was.

How To Actually Gamify Waste At Your Office

This is simpler to build than most HR programs. Five moves work for almost any Indian office, any size.

1. Award points for the right behavior. Correct segregation into the four SWM streams, composting food waste, flagging an overflowing bin: each one earns points, logged on a simple spreadsheet or app.

2. Put up a leaderboard. Floor against floor, team against team. A shared screen in the cafeteria showing live rankings turns a compliance task into a competition nobody wants to lose.

5. Celebrate publicly, every month. A mention in the town hall. A badge on someone’s ID lanyard. The reward matters less than the fact that everyone sees it happen.

None of these five need a big budget.

By 2027, expect the best-run companies in India to treat a waste game the way they already treat a wellness app or a gym subsidy: a quiet, ordinary part of working there.

The Solid Waste Management Rules 2026 make segregation mandatory.
They don’t make anyone care about it.
Gamification is what gets employees to actually do the sorting correctly, every day, without a compliance officer standing over the bin.

Untrained employees cost money and invite fines under the new rules.
Trained-but-bored employees go back to old habits within a week of the training ending.
Employees inside a well-built game keep showing up and keep the segregation accurate enough to survive a District Collector’s audit.

490 industrial units.
Seven sectors.

The government’s January announcement put the coverage at 490 obligated industrial units across seven sectors.
That does not mean 490 separate companies.
A company operating several notified plants can appear several times, because the obligation sits with the listed unit.

And the composition is interesting.
Cement accounts for 186 units.
Textiles account for 173.
Together, they make up roughly 73% of the list.
The remaining units are in pulp and paper, chlor-alkali, petroleum refining, aluminium and petrochemicals.

For those of us working with factories in Tamil Nadu, that makes this a much more immediate story than the phrase “carbon market” suggests.

The official portal is indiancarbonmarket.gov.in, launched on March 21, 2026. It is the government’s platform for administering the market. However, a functioning portal does not establish that trading has opened: October 21 reporting still described verification as underway, with credit issuance to follow.

The basic transaction is straightforward.
A factory that performs better than its notified emissions-intensity target can earn certificates to sell.
A factory that falls short must purchase and surrender certificates to cover the gap.

But how much improvement are these factories actually being asked to deliver?

Take UltraTech’s Reddipalayam unit.
The compiled schedule lists its baseline intensity at 0.5507 tonnes of carbon-dioxide equivalent per tonne of equivalent product, with a 2026–27 target of 0.5363.
That is a reduction of about 2.61%.
Tamil Nadu Cements Corporation’s Ariyalur unit has a baseline of 0.4797 and a target of 0.4689, about 2.25% lower.

Those numbers give us a much better question than whether carbon trading is good or bad.

What would it take for each plant to achieve that improvement?
An equipment replacement already planned?
Better fuel management?
A substantial investment that would otherwise never get approved?

The schedule tells us the required improvement.
It does not, by itself, tell us how much of that improvement would have happened anyway.

There is another detail hiding in the unit of measurement:
emissions per tonne of product.

Suppose a factory starts at one tonne of emissions per tonne produced.
Its target is 0.95.
It achieves 0.90, but increases production from 100,000 tonnes to 150,000 tonnes. Total emissions rise from 100,000 to 135,000 tonnes.

The factory has beaten its target.
Its emissions have also increased by 35%.

Under an intensity-based scheme, those outcomes can coexist.
Credits are calculated using the difference between the target and achieved intensity, multiplied by production.
They reward performance against that benchmark, rather than automatically proving a fall in the factory’s total emissions.

That is a deliberate way to accommodate industrial growth.
But it means anyone reading a company’s carbon-credit announcement should ask what happened to both numbers: emissions per tonne and total emissions.

Then comes the evidence.
Who verifies the fuel consumed, the production reported and the resulting emissions calculation?

BEE publishes a register of accredited verification agencies, including their sector scopes and accreditation status.
Its compliance procedure requires documented verification and an independent technical review by someone outside the verification team.
There is a checking framework.
The question is how rigorously it operates.

Working in waste management, I find that familiar.
With an EPR certificate, I want to trace the document back to the material: what arrived, where it was processed and which records connect the two.

With carbon credits, I want to trace the certificate back to the factory’s measured performance, then understand whether the benchmark demanded a meaningful change.

A trading price will eventually tell us what a certificate costs.
The factory records will tell us what it represents.
That is the proposition behind India’s Carbon Credit Trading Scheme.

The men came with axes. The women came with nothing.

Well, almost nothing.

They had a forest they weren’t willing to lose.

And as it turned out, that was enough.

The perfect day to cut down a forest.

March 26, 1974. Reni, a tiny village in the Himalayas.

A logging crew arrived with official permission to cut down trees. The village’s men had been called away to collect government compensation, a conveniently timed absence that accounts of the movement describe as deliberate.

The contractors expected an easy day.

They hadn’t accounted for Gaura Devi.

A local woman with no political influence or formal environmental training, Gaura Devi understood something the contractors didn’t. Those trees weren’t simply timber. They provided firewood, fodder, and resources that sustained the village. Their roots helped hold the fragile mountain slopes together.

Cutting the forest meant threatening everything the community depended on.

When a young girl warned her that the loggers were approaching, Gaura Devi gathered 26 other women and marched towards the trees.

The workers ordered them to leave. The women refused. Threats followed, but the women stood between the axes and the forest, ready to protect the trees with their own bodies.

Imagine that confrontation. Men with axes, backed by a commercial contract, facing village women who had absolutely none of the power normally required to stop them.

And yet, the men couldn’t proceed.

The standoff lasted through the night. Eventually, the loggers withdrew.

The trees remained standing.

The movement that changed the conversation.

Its argument was beautifully simple: why should outside contractors profit from forests while the communities living beside them struggled to access the same resources?

Activists including Chandi Prasad Bhatt and Sunderlal Bahuguna helped carry that question across the region and eventually into India’s political consciousness.

In 1980, India enacted the Forest (Conservation) Act, strengthening central oversight of forest-land diversion. Around the same period, Indira Gandhi’s government imposed a 15-year restriction on green felling in Himalayan forests of Uttar Pradesh above 1,000 metres, subject to exceptions.

Chipko was one important influence on this shift, not the sole reason for it.

Still, think about what had happened.

Women who had set out to protect a few trees helped push an entire country to reconsider how its forests should be treated.

But here’s the extraordinary part.

It had happened before.

The woman who did it first.

Travel back 244 years, to 1730, in the Rajasthan village of Khejarli.

A royal party arrived to cut khejri trees for construction work associated with the Maharaja of Jodhpur.

A Bishnoi woman named Amrita Devi refused to let them.

According to the community’s historical account, she embraced a tree and was killed while protecting it. Others followed her example. By the time the violence ended, 363 Bishnois were said to have sacrificed their lives defending the trees.

The Maharaja subsequently ordered protections for trees and wildlife in Bishnoi villages.

Two women. Two different centuries. Two different landscapes.

And the same conviction that some things are worth more than the money someone can make by destroying them.

But there’s something uncomfortable about celebrating these victories.

Saving the forest doesn’t always save the village.

Chipko succeeded in bringing forest protection into the national conversation. But many of its demands for local livelihoods and community economic rights remained unresolved.

The forest could survive while the people who protected it continued struggling.

And that’s something I keep coming back to in my own work.

I’ve spent years in waste management and recycling, watching companies celebrate landfill diversion, carbon reductions, and circular economy commitments.

But the people collecting, sorting, and recovering those materials often remain the least visible part of the story.

We want cleaner cities. But are we creating better livelihoods for the people cleaning them?

We want forests protected. But do we want the communities protecting them to prosper?

An environmental victory that leaves people behind is only half a victory.

Fifty-two years later.

Today, we have satellites that monitor deforestation, artificial intelligence that tracks ecosystems, carbon markets, environmental legislation, and sustainability reports thick enough to stop a door.

In 1974, Gaura Devi had none of that.

She had 26 other women, a forest, and a decision to make. She could step aside and watch the trees fall, or she could stand her ground.

She chose the forest.

And that’s the part I find impossible to forget.

Because somewhere along the way, we’ve made environmental action sound impossibly complicated, as though meaningful change must always begin with a billion-dollar investment, a government committee, or an international agreement.

Of course, we need all the science, technology, policy, and investment we can get.

But sometimes change begins with something much simpler.

Someone deciding that enough is enough.

On March 26, 1974, a logging crew arrived in Reni expecting to cut down a forest.

Instead, they met 27 women who refused to move.

The trees remained. And India remembered.

Which, when you think about it, is exactly where our story began.

You wash the milk packet.
Keep the cardboard dry.

Tomorrow morning, how carefully will you sort?
That question sits at the heart of Chennai’s four-bin push.

Collection vehicles have been provided with colour-coded bins too.
Violations can attract penalties.

Good.

Now comes the difficult part: making sure nobody’s effort gets undone halfway down the road.

I work in waste.
And the question I keep coming back to is painfully basic:

What happens at the next handover?

Because waste changes hands.

From the kitchen to the housekeeping team.
From the building to the collector.
From the collection vehicle to a transfer point.
From there to a facility.

Every handover is a chance to preserve the separation.
Or erase it.

One careless unloading can undo an entire street’s morning.

And it does something worse than mixing materials.
It gives people a perfectly reasonable excuse to stop.

Why should I bother? They mix it anyway.

Once that sentence enters an apartment WhatsApp group, your next awareness campaign has a much harder job.

You’re asking people to trust you again.

From the cluster audits we’ve run, three weak points keep coming up.

The household that gives up.

Week one is enthusiasm.
New bins.
New instructions.
Everyone is participating.

By week three, somebody has a question nobody answers.
A collection gets missed.
The person who usually handles the waste is away.

The system needs to work on that morning too.

The vehicle that undoes the work.

Separate compartments help.
But what happens when they fill up?
When the usual vehicle breaks down?
When the load reaches the transfer point?

The backup arrangement matters as much as the launch-day arrangement.

The black bin nobody understands.

An old battery.
A broken bulb.
Expired tablets.

We’ve told people where to put them.

Have we told the worker how to handle them?
Who collects them next?
Where they are supposed to go?

A black bin is a promise that somebody has answered those questions.

We should check.

Chennai’s collection instructions cover all 200 wards.
That means thousands of ordinary decisions, made under pressure, every morning.

The conservancy worker at your gate is where all those decisions meet.

That person needs training, equipment, time and a route that actually supports segregation. Asking them to fix every household’s mistake while keeping collection on schedule is a convenient way to pass the problem down.

So yes, inspect the bins.

Then follow the waste.

Check the collection vehicle.
Watch the unloading.
Verify the destination.
Find out whether the facility received separate material or somebody else’s mixed problem.

The resident’s responsibility starts at the bin.
The city’s responsibility continues after it.

Both have to hold.

Otherwise, we’ll buy four bins, print four stickers, collect a few fines and wonder why the same mountain keeps growing.

The module is live on the Common EPR Portal. Plastic Waste Processors have until 31 October to file. Producers, Importers, and Brand Owners have until 31 December. And for the first time, every brand using rigid plastic packaging in India has to put a number on the screen that says: 30% of last year’s packaging was recycled plastic.

Eighty-seven days. That’s the clock for brands, as of today. For recyclers, it’s closer to twenty-six.

The deadline is not the story. The supply chain is.

What changed on 31 March 2026 — the last day of the financial year those targets applied to — was relief.

The Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2026 (G.S.R. 237(E)) let producers who miss their food-contact recycled-content target carry the shortfall forward for up to three years, clearing at least one-third each year. The same logic covers reuse shortfalls.

That relief exists only for food-contact packaging. Non-food rigid packaging does not get the same runway.

And the amendment also brought “sellers” of plastic raw material into the obligated net for the first time, and directed CPCB to issue audit guidelines for recycled-content claims within six months. Self-reporting is on a countdown.

If you run packaging compliance at a company that sells cookware, foodservice film, or industrial components - the practical question is not “do we have a target?”

You already know you do.
The question is whether every supplier in your chain can prove theirs.

Register, or your trades stop counting.

On 27 August, CPCB issued a public notice that most compliance teams should have printed and pinned above their monitors.

Entities covered under the Plastic Waste Management Rules cannot carry on business without registration on the Common EPR Portal. That list is not just brand owners and recyclers. It includes producers (including micro and small enterprises), importers of plastic packaging and raw materials, manufacturers of plastic raw materials and compostable or biodegradable items, sellers, and Plastic Waste Processors across recycling, waste-to-energy, waste-to-oil, and industrial composting.

The sharper line is this: CPCB said it will discontinue recording purchase and sale transactions with unregistered entities on the portal, subject to limited exceptions for certain micro/small brand owners and some PWP transactions.

Your own registration is no longer enough.
An unregistered supplier can break your compliance chain — because the portal will stop recognising the deal.

States are already echoing the notice. Odisha’s pollution control board followed on 7 September. Nagaland’s pollution control board (NPCB) directed stakeholders on 23 September. When state boards start sending the same letter, “we’ll migrate next quarter” stops being a plan.

At Cercle X we see this from the middle of the chain — brands trying to go waste-neutral with end-to-end traceability, and processors who need those transactions to land on a portal that still recognises them. The companies that will get through December cleanest are the ones that started calling suppliers in September, not the ones that start calling in December.

The supply fight nobody has settled.

Here is the part that makes the 30% number uncomfortable.

In April, the PET Packaging Association for Clean Environment (PACE) — which represents leading beverage companies and recyclers — told the Environment Ministry that food-grade recycled PET supply was about 3.54 lakh tonnes, against a requirement of 6.84 lakh tonnes to meet the 40% recycled-content mandate for FY2026-27. Their ask: revise targets to match FSSAI-approved availability, and ease the carry-forward terms until supply catches up.

In May, the Association of PET Recyclers (APR) Bharat answered from the other side of the same table. Director General Goutham Jain said India has built roughly 4.39 lakh tonnes of food-grade rPET capacity (including non-members), at an investment of over ₹10,000 crore — and that 20–25% of that capacity sits idle because brands are not buying. APR Bharat argues the FSSAI-approved plants can cover the 40% FY26-27 mandate and the carry-forward, and that capacity is headed toward around 12.26 lakh tonnes by March 2027.

Read both letters carefully. They are not arguing about the same tonne.

PACE is talking about food-grade material actually available to packaging endpoints after fibre demand, exports, and non-food use take their cut. APR Bharat is talking about approved plant capacity and whether brands are placing orders. Both can be directionally true at once. Capacity without offtake looks like idle lines. Offtake without enough food-contact-qualified resin looks like a compliance cliff. The uncomfortable question for a beverage or FMCG packaging lead is which of those two stories your own purchase orders will support when CPCB starts auditing the recycled-content column.

These figures are from April and May. I have not seen a newer, reconciled national supply number that both sides accept. Treat them as a snapshot of the fight, not a live dashboard.

Can the certificate be trusted?

SCRAPPED already covered the “ghost certificate” scam angle in depth on 1 October, so I won’t re-litigate it here.

Brief context for anyone who missed it: on 25 June, CPCB reportedly acted against more than 200 plastic waste processing units over fake invoices and related irregularities — that figure comes from industry reporting of the enforcement wave, not from the order text itself sitting in front of me.

And on 8 September, Saurabh Shah, Managing Director of Landbell GreenForest Solutions India, wrote in Waste & Recycling that CPCB’s new exchange-style trading platform for EPR credits (EPRETP, with MSTC) risks solving a trading problem the market never primarily had.

His line is the one that sticks: the market does not have a trading problem. It has a verification problem.

An auction venue cannot make an unreliable underlying asset reliable.

If the certificate entering the system has not been independently verified against real processed tonnes, a more sophisticated marketplace just gives questionable credits a better listing page.

For packaging buyers, that lands as a procurement question: are you buying compliance, or are you buying a PDF?

The March amendment’s promised Registered Environment Auditor framework — CPCB guidelines within six months of notification — is the piece that could close that gap. Watch whether those guidelines actually land, and whether they bind recycled-content claims the same way they bind certificate generation.

The honest caveat

Three things I want you to treat carefully before you forward this to your compliance Slack.

One: the 31 December PIBO deadline and 31 October PWP deadline are as reported by Kar Parivartan on 9 September, tracking MoEFCC/CPCB’s revised FY2025-26 filing window after the portal migration. CPCB has revised plastic annual-return deadlines several times in prior cycles. Cross-check the Office Memorandum on the Common EPR Portal (epr.cpcb.gov.in) or cpcb.nic.in before you put either date in a board note. A five-minute check. Do it.

Two: the food-contact carry-forward is not a general amnesty. If your shortfall sits in non-food rigid packaging, you do not automatically get the three-year runway. Read the category line on your own SKUs.

Three: I am writing this from inside a waste-and-recycling company. That gives me a useful view of how registration gaps and certificate quality show up in real supplier conversations. It also means I have a dog in the traceability fight. Discount accordingly where you need to.

The signal to watch

Not the press release when someone announces they “achieved 30%.”

Watch whether, between now and 31 December, large brand owners publish supplier-registration completion rates alongside their recycled-content claims — what share of their plastic packaging counterparties hold a live Common EPR ID, and what share of FY2025-26 tonnes sit on transactions the portal will actually record. If that number starts showing up in investor decks and sustainability reports the way recycled-content percentages already do, the 27 August notice worked. If it doesn’t, December will produce a lot of filings that look complete on the brand’s side and fall apart one supplier deep.

The portal is open. The trades with unregistered parties are the ones quietly disappearing from the ledger.

Circularity Digest — Edition No. 16 feature | October 2, 2026

The Karamana river starts in the Agastyarkoodam hills, runs 68 kilometers west through Thiruvananthapuram, and ends in the Arabian Sea. For most of the city’s history, the river mattered as much spiritually as it did geographically. Temples lined its banks. People bathed at its ghats as ritual, not recreation. Wild cane and water lilies grew along the edges, and the river fed fish populations that fed people.

Then it didn’t. A waste treatment plant at Villappilsala, built for 90 tonnes of garbage a day, started taking in more than 200, discharging the overflow straight into the water. Raw sewage and industrial effluent followed. By the time authorities banned boating, swimming, and fishing at Thiruvallam, the Karamana wasn’t a river people revered anymore. It was a river people avoided, except to dump things in.

That’s the river, and five more waterways like it (the Killi river and a string of canals most people outside Thiruvananthapuram have never heard of: Amayizhanchan thodu, Thampanoor thodu, Ulloor thodu), that a small, unglamorous piece of steel mesh has spent the last four years quietly working on.

A fence, not a machine

The device is called a TrashBoom, and the pitch is almost aggressively unimpressive: a cluster of four buoyant tubes holding up a steel mesh net that hangs about 50 centimeters into the water. It’s semi-submerged, so fish and other aquatic life swim underneath it without getting tangled. It catches floating plastic. That’s the whole mechanism.

It was built that way on purpose. Plastic Fischer, the German outfit behind the design, was started in 2019 by three students, Karsten Hirsch, Georg Baunach, and Moritz Schulz, after a trip to Vietnam where they watched plastic pile up in the Mekong and came home asking why every proposed fix looked like a research-grant fever dream: autonomous boats, AI-sorting barges, million-dollar pilot budgets. Their answer was what they call the “3L” approach: local, low-tech, low-cost. Parts sourced locally instead of imported. No moving parts to fail. Nothing that needs an engineer on call. The design is open source; anyone can build one.

In Thiruvananthapuram, fifteen of them have been doing exactly that since 2021, dropped into the water at chokepoints along the Karamana, the Killi, and the city’s canal network. The project runs on an unusual partnership: Allianz Services India and Allianz Technology India, the insurance giant’s Indian technology and operations arms, fund and coordinate it, working alongside Thanal Trust, a Kerala environmental nonprofit, the Sustera Foundation, and Plastic Fischer itself, with backing from the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation and state government departments.

The number that makes the boring thing interesting

Four years in, the fifteen booms have pulled out more than 1,000 tonnes of plastic before it could reach the Arabian Sea. Translate that into something a person can picture: roughly 50 million plastic bottles, intercepted one chokepoint at a time, by a device that is, structurally, a fence.

For context on how unusual that is at the technology level: Plastic Fischer’s CEO has said the company’s booms have collected a little over 250 metric tonnes across all its India and Indonesia deployments combined since 2021. Thiruvananthapuram’s own number, over 1,000 tonnes, suggests this particular deployment, with this particular mix of funders and local partners, has outperformed the company’s broader average by a wide margin. The fence is the same everywhere. The difference is who kept it running.

That’s really the story here, more than the hardware.

A floating steel mesh doesn’t maintain itself.

Someone has to empty it before it fills up and starts leaking plastic back into the current.
Someone has to haul the catch to a sorting and disposal point.
Someone has to keep doing that every week, for four years, through monsoons that would make most infrastructure project managers reconsider their life choices.

The technology is the easy part of this story.
The unglamorous, compounding maintenance routine is the hard part, and it’s the part that doesn’t make it into most coverage of plastic cleanup technology.

It’s already being copied

In 2025, the project expanded to three more waterways around the city, Puthenthope, Kadinamkulam, and Veli, on the strength of the first phase’s results. More tellingly, the model is now being replicated well outside Kerala: Mangaluru, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Kanpur, and Varanasi are all adopting some version of the same approach, according to the groups involved.

That’s worth sitting with for a second, because it cuts against how most circularity success stories get told. There’s no patented breakthrough here, no novel polymer, no AI model. There’s a fence design from 2019 that three German students open-sourced, placed in exactly the right chokepoints by people who understood the local waterways, and paired with four years of someone actually doing the unglamorous work of emptying it. The research behind why this matters globally is blunt: just 1,000 of the world’s roughly three million rivers are responsible for nearly 80% of all plastic that reaches the ocean. You don’t need a moonshot to fix that problem. You need boots on the ground at the right 1,000 spots, and a reason to keep showing up.

What this says about Kerala’s rivers, specifically

None of this reverses what happened to the Karamana over the preceding decades: the dams at Peppara and Aruvikkara that throttled its natural flow, the sand mining, the sewage. A TrashBoom doesn’t fix upstream water management or treatment-plant capacity; it catches what’s already floating past. But it does something that matters in its own right: it stops today’s plastic from becoming tomorrow’s ocean statistic while the slower, harder work of fixing the actual sewage and treatment infrastructure (if it happens at all) plays out on its own, much longer timeline.

The people running Thanal Trust and the Allianz teams aren’t claiming to have resurrected a sacred river. They’re claiming something much smaller and, in its own way, more useful: that 1,000 tonnes of plastic that would have reached the sea, didn’t. Fifty million bottles’ worth of “didn’t,” one boom, one week, one empty net at a time, for four years straight. It’s a maintenance schedule that never broke. In circularity, as in most of life, that turns out to be most of the job.

He posted the video that same evening, grime still on his hands.
Two days later, 1.9 million people had watched him do it.
And before the comments even settled, he was already telling them where he’d be next.

Watch the footage and you’ll feel it too: that strange mix of admiration and discomfort, because somewhere underneath the awe is a quieter, less flattering question.

If one guy with a JCB can do this in days, why has this drain been sitting there for years?

From one river, alone, to a movement with a hashtag

Choudhary’s story doesn’t start in Delhi.

It starts in his home state of Madhya Pradesh, on the Ajnar River, where he showed up alone with basic tools and started clearing years of accumulated waste out of the water — no NGO backing, no government order, no camera crew.

Just him, the river, and a phone propped up on something.
He posted the footage the way anyone posts anything now: raw, unedited, with no real plan for what would happen next.

What happened next was that it worked. The Ajnar cleanup went properly viral, and Choudhary did the thing almost nobody manages to do with a viral moment — he turned it into a system instead of a memory.

He didn’t disappear after the algorithm moved on.
He picked a bigger, harder target: the Yamuna, the river that Delhi’s government has spent years and enormous sums trying to clean through official channels, with famously mixed results.

On September 20 — World Cleanup Day — Choudhary launched a coordinated campaign across Delhi-NCR under the hashtag #CleanWithBittu.

His crew pulled roughly 585 kilograms off the Yamuna riverbank.
Then they moved to Gurugram, brought in heavier equipment, and cleared 2,435 kilograms near Khedki Daula in a matter of days.

Noida is next; Choudhary announced it the way a musician announces a tour date, not the way a cleanup crew files a work order:
“Milte hain Noida mein” — see you in Noida.

The part that should make policymakers uncomfortable

It would be easy to file this under “inspiring young person does good deed” and move on, but the more interesting story is what it reveals about the gap between official capacity and actual results.

Delhi’s municipal bodies have run large, well-funded, multi-year river and drain cleanup programs.

Those programs exist, they have budgets, and they have produced real tonnage numbers of their own — Delhi’s MCD cleared 18,495 tonnes of waste from land along its railway tracks earlier this month, a genuinely large operation covering 123 locations across the city.

But a 21-year-old with a JCB, a camera, and no institutional backing found a stretch of Gurugram nobody had prioritized, and cleared it himself, on a timeline measured in days rather than years.

That’s not a knock on the people running the official programs — 18,495 tonnes of accumulated illegal dumping doesn’t get identified or measured without some kind of institutional effort behind it.

It’s a different point: the two approaches are complementary, and the informal one moves at a speed and with a visibility that institutional cleanups structurally can’t match. An MCD drive gets a press release.

Bittu Tabahi gets 1.9 million people watching him do the actual work, in real time, and then showing up to help.

That distinction is exactly why Boyan Slat’s organization, The Ocean Cleanup — the outfit that’s spent a decade building industrial-scale river and ocean plastic interceptors — has reportedly reached out to Choudhary with a job offer.

The Ocean Cleanup’s whole model is engineering solutions deployed with institutional rigor and long time horizons.

What it doesn’t have, and what Choudhary has in abundance, is the ability to make millions of people care about a specific drain in Gurugram on a Tuesday.

Put those two things in the same organization and you get something neither has on its own.

Why a circularity newsletter is writing about a guy with a JCB

It’s tempting to treat this as a feel-good aside from the “real” circular economy stories — the EPR policy shifts, the material innovations, the carbon accounting.

But the Bittu Tabahi story is actually a circularity story in the most literal sense: waste that had been treated as permanently out of the loop — dumped, buried, forgotten — got physically pulled back into a system where it can at least be sorted, processed, or kept from re-entering the water.

The mechanism matters less here than the pattern that keeps showing up across every domain this digest covers, from carbon-capturing bricks to soil-carbon farm payments: value or harm that everyone had implicitly priced at zero — an ignored drain, a “worthless” byproduct, an unmeasured emission — turns out to be worth something the moment somebody actually looks at it and does the work.

The honest caveat is the same one that applies to every volunteer cleanup effort: pulling 2,435 kilograms of trash out of one drain doesn’t fix the systemic reasons that trash ended up there in the first place — inadequate collection infrastructure, weak enforcement against dumping, and drainage systems that were never designed with today’s waste volumes in mind.

Choudhary’s videos don’t claim otherwise; if anything, the recurring, methodical nature of the campaign — river after river, city after city — is itself an argument that this is a symptom needing a systemic fix, not a one-time miracle.

What’s worth actually tracking over the next few months is whether #CleanWithBittu becomes a genuine model — a repeatable, community-mobilized complement to institutional cleanup programs — or whether it, like most viral environmental moments, quietly fades once the novelty wears off.

The signal to watch isn’t the follower count.
It’s whether the volunteers who show up in Noida are still showing up three cities and three months from now.

What came back, across 17 submersible dives during the 2025 summer season, was two stories stacked on top of each other. The first: on 10 of those 17 dives, the team logged 29 pieces of unmistakably human debris — plastic wrappers, shopping bags, food packaging, fishing gear, a rubber boot — sitting on the seafloor at depths between 1,920 and 3,814 meters. Almost four kilometers down, in a place no fishing boat or beachgoer has ever directly touched. The second story, found in the same footage, on the same dives: roughly 40 species that may be entirely new to science.

Nearly four kilometers down is not supposed to be easy to reach

It’s worth sitting with the depth for a second, because it’s the whole reason this canyon is interesting instead of another routine ocean survey. Mar del Plata Canyon carves into the continental shelf off Argentina’s coast, and its deepest surveyed points here — 3,814 meters — put it well below where sunlight penetrates, past the mesophotic zone entirely, into genuine deep-sea territory. Getting a research team, a submersible, and camera equipment down there and back isn’t cheap or quick. It’s exactly the kind of place that stays unsurveyed for decades simply because nobody has the budget or the equipment lined up at the right time — the same story that let a living coral reef off Benin go unrecorded for sixty years, as this digest covered a few weeks back.

That’s what makes the trash finding land differently than a beach cleanup number. Nobody drove a boat out to this canyon and dumped a bag of wrappers over the side. The debris that Lauretta’s team found had to travel there — carried by currents, sinking slowly from the surface or drifting in from fishing activity, settling into a canyon that, according to the survey, holds noticeably more litter than the open seafloor around it. The canyon’s own shape, the same geological feature that makes it worth studying, appears to be funneling debris in exactly the way a drain funnels water. Depth was never a defense. It just delayed the discovery of how little defense there actually was.

The part that should unsettle you more than the trash count

Here’s the detail from the survey that’s harder to sit with than “29 objects.” Some of the debris wasn’t just resting on the seafloor — it had things growing on it. Deep-sea corals and starfish had attached themselves directly to pieces of plastic, using it the way they’d use any other hard surface on an otherwise soft, sediment-covered seabed.

It would be easy to read that as a hopeful detail — nature adapting, life finding a way, the ocean shrugging off what we throw at it. Lauretta’s team was careful not to let that reading stand unchallenged. Colonizing a piece of plastic is not the same as thriving on it. A barnacle or a coral polyp attaching to a bottle because it’s the only solid surface within reach isn’t evidence the ecosystem is fine with plastic in its habitat — it’s evidence of how sparse hard surfaces naturally are on a soft seafloor, and how readily deep-sea organisms will use whatever shows up, including garbage. What looks like resilience at a glance is really just opportunism under scarcity, and conflating the two is exactly how people end up telling themselves plastic pollution in the deep ocean is a manageable, even mildly interesting, side effect rather than a genuine problem.

Forty unnamed species, found by accident

The other half of this expedition is the part that would normally be the entire headline on its own: around 40 species that may be new to science, documented across those same 17 dives. Deep-sea biodiversity surveys routinely turn up new species — the deep ocean remains the least-catalogued major habitat on the planet, full stop — but finding that many candidates in one canyon, on what was fundamentally a baseline reconnaissance trip rather than a dedicated taxonomic expedition, says something about how little of this specific stretch of ocean anyone had actually looked at before.

That’s the real headline underneath both findings, trash and new species alike: this canyon was, functionally, unmeasured. Not protected, not studied, not on anyone’s map as either a conservation priority or a pollution concern, simply because nobody had gone and looked. The expedition didn’t discover that the canyon suddenly became interesting. It discovered that it always was, and that “we don’t have data on this yet” is doing a lot of quiet, unexamined work across the ocean generally — the same blind spot that let old, out-of-date verdicts about supposedly dead or empty places sit unchallenged for decades.

Why a circularity newsletter keeps writing about the ocean

The pattern connecting this to everything else in this digest isn’t subtle once you see it: an unmeasured space defaults to being treated as either empty or fine, and it’s neither, until someone actually goes and checks. A canyon nobody surveyed becomes a canyon nobody protects and nobody worries about polluting — right up until a research team spends the money to go look, and both problems and discoveries turn out to have been sitting there the whole time, undocumented rather than nonexistent. Waste streams get the same treatment constantly. A byproduct nobody’s measured doesn’t get called “waste” or “resource” — it just doesn’t get called anything, and defaults to the drain, the landfill, or the ocean floor, purely because pricing or protecting it would first require someone to count it.

Mar del Plata Canyon isn’t a circularity story in the tight sense — nothing here is getting looped back into a supply chain. But it’s a clean illustration of the same failure mode this newsletter tracks in landfills and MRFs and EPR policy every day: distance and depth get mistaken for safety, and the absence of data gets mistaken for the absence of a problem. Both mistakes run in both directions. The trash traveled nearly four kilometers to get there. So, unnoticed, did an entire community of species nobody had catalogued yet.

What to watch next

The honest caveat is the one that applies to essentially every single-expedition finding: 40 “possible new species” is a preliminary count, not a confirmed one — formal taxonomic description takes years, sample-by-sample, and some fraction of these will turn out to already have names once they’re compared against existing collections. Similarly, 29 objects across 10 dives establishes that debris reaches this depth and concentrates in this canyon; it doesn’t yet establish the total volume down there, or how it compares to other unsurveyed canyons along the same coastline.

The number worth tracking over the next couple of years isn’t the species count or the object count from this one trip. It’s whether Argentina, or a regional research consortium, goes back to survey the rest of that canyon system, and whether “we should probably check the other unsurveyed canyons nearby” becomes a funded follow-up rather than a line in a paper’s discussion section. A canyon that sat unmeasured for this long has already demonstrated what happens by default. What hasn’t been tested is what happens once someone decides to keep looking.

It isn’t rock. It’s trash. Specifically, it’s somewhere around 53 million broken clay jars, stacked, sorted, and compacted by hand over roughly three centuries, starting around the 1st century BC. The Romans called the general practice testae — broken pottery — and this particular pile got big enough to earn its own name: Monte Testaccio. The mountain of shards.

I’ve spent a lot of this year writing about circularity as something new — AI sorters, carbon-cured bricks, enzymes that eat plastic. Monte Testaccio is a useful gut-check, because it’s a 2,000-year-old reminder that “what do we do with the stuff we can’t recycle” is not a new question. Rome had an answer. It just wasn’t the answer you’d expect.

The oil economy that built a mountain

Start with why the jars existed at all. Rome, at its peak, was a city of over a million people with essentially no local olive oil production worth mentioning. All of it came in by ship — mostly from Baetica, the Roman province roughly overlapping today’s Andalusia in southern Spain — packed into a specific style of amphora known to archaeologists as the Dressel 20. Fat-bodied, thick-walled, built to survive a sea crossing without leaking.

The numbers involved are hard to hold in your head. Based on the volume of material in the mound, historians estimate Rome was importing at least 7.5 million liters of olive oil a year, for centuries, just to keep the city running — cooking, lighting lamps, bathing. Each liter meant a jar. Each jar, once emptied, became a problem.

And here’s the part that makes Monte Testaccio interesting instead of just old: Rome recycled constantly. Wine amphorae and grain amphorae, once empty, routinely got smashed up and mixed into concrete as aggregate, or reused whole as drainage pipes, plumbing casings, even burial urns for infants. Reuse-of-broken-pottery is such a well-documented Roman habit that archaeologists have a name for the study of it. The Dressel 20, though, wouldn’t cooperate. Its walls were too thick to break down into anything useful, and — this is the detail that gets me — the walls were saturated with residual olive oil that had gone rancid over the voyage. That oil reacted chemically with the lime in concrete mix and ruined it. You couldn’t grind the jar up. You couldn’t build with it. You couldn’t even burn it cleanly, because Rome didn’t want the entire dock district smelling like burning spoiled oil for a decade.

So the material that arrived in the highest volume, that the city needed the most, was also the one piece of packaging Rome had no circular use for at all.

What they did instead: they engineered the failure

This is the detail I think gets lost when this story gets told as “ancient people also had a trash problem, ha ha.” Monte Testaccio was not a dump in the way we picture one — not a heap where people flung jars over their shoulder and walked away. Archaeological surveys have found it’s terraced. Retaining walls built from larger jar fragments hold back the smaller broken material behind them, in organized tiers, rising as the mound grew. Access ramps allowed workers to keep hauling material up to the working face at the top, layer after layer, year after year. At the campaign’s peak in the 2nd century AD, researchers estimate as many as 130,000 amphorae a year were being deposited there — over 350 jars a day, every day, methodically stacked rather than dumped.

This was, by most reconstructions, managed by the praefectus annonae — the Roman official in charge of the city’s food supply. In other words: waste management for unrecyclable oil jars wasn’t an afterthought bolted onto Rome’s food distribution system. It was part of the food distribution system. The empire that gets credit for inventing aqueducts and concrete and standardized road networks looked at a packaging material it flatly could not close the loop on, and instead of pretending otherwise, built dedicated, state-run infrastructure to contain the failure as productively as possible.

Sprinkle lime between the layers to control the smell and stabilize the pile as it went, and 300 years later, you get a mountain stable enough to still be standing in 2026, with wine bars carved into it.

Why I think this matters for anyone doing circularity work right now

Every circularity program I’ve ever been part of eventually runs into its own Dressel 20 — the fraction of material that arrives at real volume, that everyone agrees is a problem, and that genuinely cannot be closed-looped with the technology or economics available right now. Multi-layer flexible plastic. Certain composite textiles. In our world, contaminated mixed waste streams that no MRF sorter, however good the optical scanner, can pull apart economically.

The instinct in a lot of sustainability messaging is to treat that fraction as an embarrassment — the thing you don’t put in the annual report, the stat you’d rather round away. Monte Testaccio suggests a different posture. Rome didn’t hide its unrecyclable fraction. It didn’t pretend the Dressel 20 problem didn’t exist, or promise investors a breakthrough was six months away. It built dedicated, visible, engineered infrastructure to handle the stuff honestly — and in doing so, accidentally created one of the best-preserved economic records of the ancient world. Archaeologists can now read Roman trade volumes, shipping routes, and even individual producer stamps directly off the broken jars, because someone bothered to organize the failure instead of scattering it.

“Zero waste” gets used today like it’s a real, reachable state. It isn’t, and it never has been, for any economy at any point in history — Rome included. What’s reachable is being honest and organized about the fraction you haven’t solved yet, instead of letting it become an unmanaged mess. Rome built a landmark out of that honesty. Most of us are still working on the honesty part.

At the Third International Atmospheric Water Harvesting Summit, held this year by Arizona State University’s Global Center for Water Technology, the framing from researchers and founders alike had shifted.

A field that spent two summits arguing about lab efficiency numbers spent its third arguing about deployment logistics, financing models, and grid integration. That’s what a technology sounds like right before it stops being a novelty.

The physics nobody explains well

Every gigalitre of “atmospheric water” comes from one of two approaches. The first, older one is mechanical: run humid air over a cold coil, condense the moisture, filter it — essentially a dehumidifier with a marketing budget. It works, but it’s power-hungry and falls apart in dry climates, which happen to be exactly the places that need alternative water sources most.

The second approach, and the one drawing the real investment right now, is desiccant-based. Instead of brute-forcing condensation with refrigeration, a hygroscopic material — a salt solution, a specially engineered sponge-like solid — grabs water vapor out of the air through chemical affinity, the same way silica gel keeps a shoebox dry. Heat (increasingly solar) then drives the water back out of the desiccant as clean vapor, which condenses into liquid. No refrigerant, far less electricity, and critically, it keeps working in arid air where mechanical condensers give up.

That distinction is why the “lab to field” story is happening now and not five years ago. Desiccant chemistry only became efficient and cheap enough to manufacture at scale recently — and the difference shows up directly in the numbers coming out of field deployments.

An Indian company is one of the ones actually doing it

While the American and Gulf press has spent the last year chasing splashy AWH pilots in Las Vegas and Abu Dhabi, one of the more commercially mature versions of this technology has been running quietly out of Bangalore.

Uravu Labs — started in 2016 as a student project at NIT Calicut — builds its water harvesting around what it calls the Clausius platform: a thermally-driven liquid desiccant cycle that uses a proprietary hygroscopic solution instead of mechanical refrigeration. The company claims roughly 75% lower energy consumption than conventional AWG systems in dry conditions, and its industrial platform is rated at 30,000 liters of distilled water per megawatt per day.

The commercial traction is the part worth paying attention to, because it’s the part almost nobody manages at this stage.

Uravu’s consumer brand, FromAir, has sold more than 3.8 million bottles and is served at close to 100 restaurants and luxury hotels, including The Leela in Bengaluru. On the industrial side, the company is running water-as-a-service pilots with AB InBev and Radico Khaitan — both companies with obvious, self-interested reasons to want a water source that doesn’t compete with community groundwater during a monsoon-dependent year.

There’s a second version of the Clausius platform aimed at data centers, which is arguably the more interesting long-term play. Data centers reject enormous amounts of waste heat and, increasingly, face local opposition over how much water their cooling systems consume. A system that captures that waste heat and turns it into distilled water instead of just venting it into the atmosphere flips a liability into a byproduct. Uravu has been selected for Abu Dhabi’s Hub71 accelerator cohort and says it’s expanding into Japan and the US — both markets where data center water use is becoming a genuine political problem, not just an ESG footnote.

None of this means the economics are solved everywhere. Cost-per-liter still depends heavily on ambient humidity, local electricity or solar availability, and system scale — industrial platforms measured in megawatts look very different from a countertop unit for a household. But “over 3.8 million bottles sold” and “pilots with a listed brewer” are not lab metrics. They’re commercial ones.

Why a waste-management guy is writing about water

It’s tempting to file this under climate tech and move on, but the framing matters for anyone working in circularity. Waste and water have always been treated as separate problems with separate ministries, separate audits, separate funding lines. Atmospheric water harvesting quietly erodes that separation, because its best economics show up exactly where “waste” already exists: waste heat from a data center, waste heat from an industrial process, humid exhaust air from a cooling tower. The input isn’t a river or a borewell. It’s a byproduct that was already being thrown away.

That’s the same logic that underpins every good circularity story — carbon-cured bricks that turn a captured emission into a building material, seaweed packaging that turns an overgrown coastal nuisance into a compostable film. The pattern keeps repeating: the “waste” was never actually waste, just an unpriced input waiting for someone to build the loop.

What to watch next

The honest caveat: nobody at the summit claimed AWH will replace municipal water systems or large-scale desalination any time soon, and it shouldn’t be sold that way. What it’s good at — right now, commercially — is decentralized, off-grid, or supplementary supply: hotels, industrial parks, data centers, disaster response, water-stressed regions without reliable piped infrastructure. It’s a complement to the grid, not (yet) a competitor to it.

The number worth tracking over the next 12 months isn’t a lab efficiency figure. It’s deployed megawatt-capacity and bottled/served volume — the two numbers Uravu is already willing to publish, and the two numbers that separate a genuine field technology from another conference demo. If more AWH companies start publishing numbers like “3.8 million bottles sold” instead of “X% more efficient than 2019,” that’s the signal this has actually crossed over.

Combine harvesters move through paddy fields and leave behind a few inches of stubble the machine can’t use. Farmers have somewhere between two and three weeks to clear that stubble before they need the same field prepped for wheat. And every year, a meaningful chunk of that stubble goes up in smoke — quite literally — because burning a field takes an afternoon and a box of matches, while almost every other option takes money, machinery, or time farmers don’t have.

This week, the government put another Rs 544.15 crore behind trying to change that math for the 2026-27 cycle, with the first tranche of Rs 272.07 crore already released. That’s on top of more than Rs 4,266 crore spent on the same problem since 2018-19. Forty-six thousand more crop residue management machines are headed to Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh this year. Nine hundred and ten new Custom Hiring Centres are opening so farmers who can’t afford a Happy Seeder can rent one. There’s now a dedicated “Stubble Protection Force” patrolling 70 tehsils across 14 districts in the NCR region, and the agriculture ministry is projecting 27.62 million tonnes of paddy stubble will need handling this harvest season alone.

Read those numbers back to back and you’d assume the problem is underfunded. It isn’t. It’s a problem that money alone was never going to fix, because the thing standing between a farmer and a cleaner field isn’t price. It’s a clock.

The window is the whole story

Here’s the mechanical reality nobody puts on a policy slide: a farmer harvesting paddy in late September or October isn’t deciding between burning stubble and not burning it in the abstract.

A Happy Seeder — the machine that lets you sow wheat directly into stubble without clearing it first — solves this in theory. In practice, there still aren’t enough of them to go around during the exact ten-day window when every farmer in a district needs one at once. You can subsidize a machine at 50% or 80% of its cost, which the government already does, and it still doesn’t help the farmer who’s third in line for the one Happy Seeder serving their village. Scarcity at the moment of need beats a subsidy that arrived in March.

That’s the part that past rounds of this policy kept getting wrong, and this year’s version — on paper — at least tries to attack from a different angle: instead of only paying farmers not to burn, build an actual market for the stubble itself.

The compressed biogas angle, and why it’s harder than it sounds

Compressed biogas, or CBG, is where a lot of the real circularity money is now pointed. The pitch is straightforward: paddy straw, press mud from sugar mills, and other agricultural residue get fed into anaerobic digesters, which produce biogas that’s cleaned up and compressed into something that can run a vehicle or heat a stove, chemically similar to natural gas. Uttar Pradesh alone is targeting a jump from roughly 350 tonnes of CBG production per day to 1,000 tonnes per day within five years, backed by projects like GPS Renewables’ ARYA platform, which has already put down Rs 1,200 crore in investment with a further Rs 3,000 crore planned for 25 plants in its first phase. The government is kicking in Market Development Assistance of Rs 1,500 per tonne for the leftover fermented organic manure, and a 5% CBG blending obligation is coming by FY2028-29 to guarantee demand on the other end.

On paper, this is the dream circular loop: a pollution source becomes a paid-for input, farmers get income instead of a fine, and the gas grid gets a renewable feedstock. And yet — straight from the people building these plants — farmers who are getting paid for their stubble are still burning some of it anyway.

That single fact is the whole lesson of this story. It’s not a pricing failure. A CBG plant needs biomass arriving at its gate essentially every day of the year to run economically. A rice harvest produces nearly all of its stubble in a three-week window, once a year, in specific districts. Somebody has to collect it, bale it, store it without it rotting or catching fire, and move it to a plant on a schedule that has nothing to do with when the farmer actually wants it off their land. That’s a logistics and storage problem, not a feedstock-price problem — and logistics problems don’t get solved by a per-tonne subsidy. They get solved by baling capacity, warehouse space, and transport networks that don’t yet exist at the scale 27.62 million tonnes requires.

What’s actually different this time

To be fair to this year’s push, a few things are structurally new. The scale of the Custom Hiring Centre network — now over 44,000 machines deployed cumulatively — means more farmers than ever technically have access to in-situ management equipment, even if access during the exact right ten days is still uneven. The government is also pushing Direct Seeded Rice and shorter-duration paddy varieties, which is a quieter but potentially more durable fix: a paddy variety that matures two weeks earlier doesn’t just reduce the burning window, it widens it, giving the Happy Seeder queue room to actually clear before wheat sowing starts.

None of this guarantees a smoke-free October. Delhi’s air quality index will likely spike again sometime in the next six weeks regardless of how much money got spent this year, and that gap between spending and outcome is exactly why this story is worth watching rather than celebrating. But the shift from “pay farmers to not burn” toward “build a market where the stubble is worth more collected than burned” is the right direction, even if the logistics haven’t caught up to the policy yet.

The number to actually track this season isn’t the crore figure. It’s tonnes of stubble that moved into a CBG plant or a biomass power unit instead of up in smoke — because that’s the number that tells you whether the market side of this problem is finally catching up to the subsidy side.

• Chennai is building what’s being called Southeast Asia’s biggest desalination plant. The Rs 4,276 crore, JICA-funded facility at Perur will produce 400 million litres of drinking water daily for 22.67 lakh people, with completion targeted before December 2026. Source

• Ocean Census documented 1,121 new marine species in a single year — a 54% jump over typical discovery rates — through 13 expeditions and over 1,400 taxonomists across 85 countries, cutting the usual 13.5-year gap between discovery and formal description by more than half. Source

• Mycelium packaging is moving from niche to industrial, with Apple reportedly piloting it for 2026 product lines. Ecovative’s new 100,000-square-foot facility now produces millions of mushroom-grown packaging parts a year, with grow time down to 5-7 days; IKEA and Dell have already replaced styrofoam with it at scale. • Indofast Energy is opening a new battery swap station roughly every five hours. The network crossed 1,600 stations and 90,000 EVs across 23 Indian cities in FY26, preventing an estimated 80,000 tonnes of CO2, and is targeting 3,500 stations and 2.32 lakh EVs by FY27. Source

This one’s different.

This is a story about someone who got it right before anything was built.

A school in one of the hottest places in India.

Jaisalmer. Thar Desert. Summers regularly cross 45°C.

The Rajkumari Ratnavati Girls’ School sits right in the middle of that heat. Nearly 400 girls, aged 5 to 16, from families below the poverty line.

No air conditioning. Not because they couldn’t afford it. Because they didn’t need it.

Here’s the part that stopped me.

Most buildings in this climate fight the heat with machines. Compressors. Grid power. Backup diesel when the grid fails — which, in rural Rajasthan, it does.

This school didn’t fight the heat. It was built to work with it.

The building is oval — not a random design choice, an aerodynamic one. The curved shape lets desert wind flow around and into the structure instead of slamming into flat walls.

High ceilings do the rest. Hot air rises, escapes through small vents near the roof.

Result: classrooms run 10 to 30°F cooler than outside. No compressor. No backup diesel. No grid dependency.

The material tells the same story.

Hand-carved local sandstone. The same golden stone Jaisalmer is named for.

Sandstone has natural thermal mass — it soaks up heat slowly through the day, releases it slowly at night. Combined with thick walls and traditional jali screens, it does passively what most modern buildings do with electricity.

And because the stone was sourced locally, the school was built almost entirely by craftsmen from the surrounding villages. Many of them fathers of the girls who now study there.

That’s not a footnote. That’s the whole model — design that keeps the value inside the community it serves, instead of importing it.

Then there’s the water.

Desert regions don’t get much rain. So when the monsoon does come, this school is built to catch as much of it as it can — roof and courtyard designed for rainwater harvesting, using principles borrowed from centuries-old regional systems. Greywater gets recycled instead of wasted.

Solar panels power the lights and fans. The same solar canopy doubles as a shaded play area underneath.

One structure. Two jobs. Every time.

The detail that actually got me, though, isn’t architecture at all.

Partway through construction, the team realized the building’s footprint would kill two small trees on site.

They didn’t cut them down. They moved the building.

Those two trees are part of the courtyard today.

I keep coming back to this one detail because it tells you something the solar panels and the sandstone don’t: sustainability here wasn’t a checklist. It was a default posture. When something existing was in the way of something new, the instinct was to redesign around it — not remove it.

That instinct is rare. In my world — packaging, waste, industrial design — I see the opposite instinct constantly. Convenience first. Consequence later, if ever.

Why this matters more than the architecture awards.

And it has won plenty — Architectural Digest India’s Building of the Year, a 2023 AIA Architecture Award.

But awards aren’t the point.

Jaisalmer has one of the lowest female literacy rates in India. A school that’s actually livable through the hottest months of the year, without infrastructure that can fail or that a rural school often can’t afford to keep running — that’s not a design flourish.

That’s the difference between a girl showing up to class in May and a girl not showing up at all.

The lesson I keep taking from this, in my own work:

We spend so much energy trying to manage the consequences of bad design — waste, heat, cost, whatever it is — instead of asking why the design created the consequence in the first place.

This school didn’t need a smarter cooling system. It needed a smarter shape.

That’s the same conversation I have with brands about packaging. The same conversation I have about waste systems. The fix almost never needs to be more technology bolted on at the end.

It needs to be thought about at the start.

📦 The True Villain Isn’t Plastic

It’s bad design.

Design that optimizes for consumption speed, not recovery.
Design that adds gloss to the shelf, but filth to the landfill.
Design that serves the brand — but punishes the city.

Every day, on our MRF floors, I see this villain show up.

And every day, I see waste workers — mostly women — try to clean up what never should’ve been designed this way in the first place.

It’s like asking a sweeper to fix a collapsed bridge.
Wrong tool. Wrong stage. Wrong responsibility.

What I saw confirmed what I’ve felt for years:

India doesn’t have a collection problem.
We have a packaging design problem.
And the poorest neighborhoods are paying for it.

It’s easy to blame the consumer.

“It wasn’t disposed of properly.”
“People don’t segregate.”

But here’s the truth:

You can’t recycle what was never recyclable to begin with.
