I've spent almost a decade in the sustainability domain.
Here are six things I wish I'd have done (earlier):
- 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝗮 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸: I now realize the power of collaboration. Connecting with other sustainability changemakers early on would have broadened my reach and impact.
- 𝗘𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮: Learning to understand data would have opened doors to powerful ideas, and make data-driven decisions.
- 𝗚𝗼 𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴: I used to think the dustbin was the answer to all wastes. Discovering (the horror of) landfills opened my eyes to the power of giving things a second life.
- 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲: I remember that I was on a spree of purchasing "sustainable" outfits - organic cotton (you get the drift). Then I learnt a valuable lesson: true sustainability goes beyond trendy labels. Less is more.
- 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀, 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲: I spent all my time jet-setting around the country at the drop of a hat. Now I know the most sustainable path isn't always the most traveled. Do zoom if you can.
- 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲: Burning out for creating that big impact? Been there, done that. Sustainability is a marathon, not a sprint. Prioritizing well-being fuels long-term impact. Mini-retire, every year.
Sustainability is a constant learning process, and I'm excited to see what the future holds.
What about you?
